Surgical Menopause

Surgical menopause occurs when a woman undergoes removal of both ovaries (oophorectomy), typically as part of a hysterectomy or cancer prevention procedure. Because the ovaries are the primary source of estrogen and progesterone, their removal causes an abrupt onset of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy is often considered to manage these effects.
