Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic form of estrogen that was prescribed to pregnant women from the 1940s to the 1970s to prevent miscarriages and other pregnancy complications. It was later found to cause serious health risks, including reproductive abnormalities and increased cancer risk in the children exposed to it in utero.
