What Is a Laparoscopic Cystectomy?
Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery to remove benign cysts from the ovary while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue. The goal is to:
- Eliminate pain and pressure caused by the cyst
- Rule out malignancy after pathological review
- Protect future fertility and hormone function
Unlike open abdominal surgery, laparoscopic techniques use 3–4 tiny incisions and specialized tools to safely remove the cyst with less pain, faster healing, and a better cosmetic result.
Is This Surgery Right for Me?
We typically recommend surgery if you:
- Have persistent or growing cysts larger than 5 cm
- Experience pain during periods, sex, or bowel movements
- Have cysts with complex or solid features on imaging
- Are trying to conceive and the cyst is interfering
Not all cysts require surgery—we carefully evaluate:
- Type (functional vs. pathological)
- Symptoms
- Risk of malignancy
- Your age and fertility goals
How the Procedure Works
All surgical procedures are performed by Dr. Lucas Minig, a global leader in complex gynecological surgery. Surgeries are performed under general anesthesia using 4 small incisions (5 mm) in the pelvis. Most procedures take 30 to 60 minutes.
- A small camera is inserted through the belly button
- 2 to 3 instruments are inserted via tiny incisions (5mm)
- The cyst is carefully separated from the ovary
- It is placed in a small retrieval bag and removed
- The ovary is preserved whenever possible
All removed tissue is sent for lab analysis to confirm the type of cyst.
Patients from around the world trust our expertise to treat even the most complex cases that local providers may not manage.

Frequently asked questions
What type of anesthesia is used for a cystectomy?
General anesthesia is most commonly used for laparoscopic and abdominal cystectomy procedures. It ensures you’re fully asleep and comfortable throughout the surgery. In some cases, hysteroscopic cystectomy may also be performed under general anesthesia, depending on the extent and location of the cyst.
How is a laparoscopic cystectomy performed?
A laparoscope (a thin, camera-equipped tube) is inserted through a small incision at or near the navel. Additional tiny incisions are made in the abdominal wall to allow surgical instruments to access and remove the cyst. This minimally invasive approach results in reduced pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring compared to open surgery.
What can I expect during recovery?
Most patients resume light activity within 24–48 hours after surgery. You’ll be encouraged to move gently at home, but avoid lifting heavy objects or overexertion. Pain is usually well managed with oral analgesics, and full return to regular activities—including sexual intercourse—will depend on your doctor’s assessment during follow-up.
Typical recovery time: 1–2 weeks, though this may vary based on cyst size, complexity, and individual healing response. What exercises are safe after a cystectomy?
For the first 4 weeks, avoid exercises that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as abdominal workouts, intense cardio, or weightlifting. However, light walking on flat surfaces is encouraged soon after surgery to promote circulation and prevent complications. Always follow your surgeon’s personalized advice before resuming full workouts.
How can I reduce bloating after laparoscopy?
Mild bloating is common after laparoscopic procedures due to gas introduced into the abdomen.
To alleviate discomfort:
- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly
- Avoid gas-producing foods (e.g., dairy, legumes, cruciferous vegetables)
- Take short walks to help move gas through the digestive tract
- Stay hydrated and consider warm herbal teas
How long does it take for the ovary to heal after a cystectomy?
While external incisions may heal within days, the ovary typically requires 2–4 weeks for internal healing. You may feel more tired than usual during this time and may need mild pain relief. Most patients feel significantly better by the second week, but full recovery varies based on your body and the complexity of the surgery.
