A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a screening procedure used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix that may develop into cervical cancer. During the test, cells are gently scraped from the cervix and examined under a microscope. It is a routine part of gynecologic care and is especially important for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, often performed every three to five years depending on age and risk factors.
