Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure in which a colposcope—a special magnifying instrument—is used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. It is often recommended after abnormal Pap smear results to detect precancerous or cancerous changes. During the procedure, acetic acid or iodine solution may be applied to highlight abnormal cells.
